He married Mary Maria Nettle in Tywardreath, Cornwall, United Kingdom, 2 July 1843. Mary was born in Par, Cornwall, United Kingdom 1823. Mary died 28 August 1883 in Wallaroo Mines, South Australia, at 60 years of age.

John Reed and Mary Maria Nettle had the following children:

34 vii. Elizabeth Ann Reed was born in Lostwithiel, South Australia 2 August 1860. Elizabeth died 19 June 1866 Moonta, South Australia, at 5 years of age.

+ 35 viii. Matthew Joseph Reed was born 24 September 1862.
