37. Matthew Herbert³ Brown (William Mitchell², Stephen¹) was born in Saddleworth, South Australia 16 September 1877.

He married Susan Crowe. Susan was born in Eudunda, South Australia 19 February 1882. Susan was the daughter of Daniel Crowe and Mary Donnellan. Henry Neal Sweeney referred to Susan as Auntie "Suzie". Suzies mariage to Matt Brown was marred by his drinking habits to the extent that she eventually left Matt, taking the children with her and went with Horace Theodore Brown and his family to Western Australia to live. When I (Harry Raymond Sweeney) recall him in the early 1960's he was living in a small galvanised iron house on the property of "Marj" and "Den" Bleasing between Cave Avenue and Aldgate Terrace, Aldgate. He was a small man not unlike his grand father Stephen a real cousin Jack, who my father called uncle "Matt" and occasionally came to my parents house which was a little further down the valley at 312 Cave Avenue, Aldgate. He would come down on the pretext of getting a few broken biscuits but he was only lonley, his wife Suzy and children had left him and travelled to Western Australia with his brother Horace Brown, his wife "Nel" and children, many years before. Susie left Matt because he was very fond of his drink, not that I had ever seen him drunk in all the years that I knew him. He came to Aldgate to be near his married sister Beatrice Olive Sweeney "Olly" my grandmother and her husband "Sam" who lived across the Strathalbyn road down Dalton Avenue. He would walk the two miles down to Aldgate village for his groceries which he would buy at "Carvers four square store, and pick up any mail once a week. In the hot weather to keep his beer cold he would tie a string around the neck of a 26 ounce bottle of Southwark and lower it down the well and into the water to get cold. Matthew Herbert Brown and Susan Crowe had the following children:

79 i. Sophie⁴ Brown was born in Eudunda, South Australia. Sophie died 29 December 1906 in Kapunda, South Australia.
